Three Seconds to Save Their Lives: Revisited

Unpacking the Skills That Saved Jacqui

Now that you understand the foundations of The 7 Skills to Impress™, we can step back to see how Eddard used them with Jacqui

You’ve already seen how he saved her and her children, let’s rewind to the moment he realised who she was and examine how those seven skills guided every word that followed.

Jacqui had been in a magnetic Rapport with Eddard. But as he faltered, their connection loosened, and she uttered those fateful words:

“I know what you’re trying to do, thank you, but I know what I have to do. Please don’t blame yourself. I’m going to put the phone down ….”

For a heartbeat, he lost his composure. The tension was unbearable. The stakes couldn’t have been higher.

Manage Your State / 7–11 Breathing

Even in that chaos, Eddard’s training took over.

He slipped into 7–11 Breathing, a technique he practised daily until it became automatic. When pressure struck, he didn’t freeze.

He stayed in control of his mind and body, keeping System 2 (analytical thinking) online while his emotions raged beneath. This simple habit gave him clarity where others might have panicked.

Identify Your Outcome / Practise Rapport

Eddard had learned never to step into any negotiation without an Outcome, a clear sense of purpose to steer both his thoughts and his language.

In pressure times, that Outcome is rarely perfect or final; it evolves in real time.

I liked to study how elite athletes perform under extreme stress, and have noticed the same use of Outcomes. In one example, LeBron James spoke about breaking decisive moments into single plays. One stop. One shot. Nothing beyond that. Each action is complete in itself, yet moving him closer to the result that mattered.

(You can find the post on LeBron here)

Eddard had taken that idea into his work. We called them Shots and Stops Outcomes. Small, immediate objectives: Each small win builds momentum and confidence toward the overarching goal.

But in this call, his plan shattered when Jacqui uttered those fateful words.

For an instant, his System 1 flooded with images of failure, Robbie, loss, guilt.

Yet his steady breathing kept System 2 in control. He redirected his focus to a new, simpler Outcome:

Keep Jacqui on the phone.

That was all. Nothing more.

When the subconscious is clearly focused in this way, it mobilises everything to achieve it. Eddard’s System 1 was now working for him, not against him.

The Moment of Recovery

He paused for a second and then spoke:

“I know you’re going to put the phone down, and, before you do, may I ask you one question?”

Jacqui’s answer was barely a whisper, but it was enough.

“OK”

Eddard had reopened the door with a few, simple words: words that sounded gentle and unplanned, yet reached far beneath the surface, speaking directly to Jacqui’s subconscious. In Part 2, Chapter 6 – Stay in Accord, we’ll unpack how such quiet simplicity can hold extraordinary power.

The Turning Point

This wasn’t luck or chance. Eddard had fused his Outcome, his Managed State, and Rapport into a calm, purposeful trinity that reached beyond Jacqui’s despair.

As you move on, keep this moment in mind. It shows how these skills operate, helping you to build trust, connection, and influence when it matters most.

Coming Next

We’ll now explore Stay in Accord, Skill 6 of The 7 Skills to impress™, and see how agreement-based language kept that fragile thread of trust alive.
