Finding the right words under pressure is hard, even for managers who do it every week. PMR tracks how well they manage it in the minutes after a match.
I learned how much those words matter in places where lives were on the line. One of those moments came down to three seconds. I’ll tell you about it at the end.
Every post-match interview Frank Lampard has given in Premier Managers Revealed 2026/27, collected in one place: the quotes, the score out of 12, the Identity level and the analysis, matchweek by matchweek. For the latest standings, see the Premier Managers Revealed league tables.
Matchweek 1
Arsenal 3 – 0 Coventry City
Friday 21 August, Emirates Stadium
Frank Lampard — Coventry City (away)
10/12 · Identity level fed: Belonging
“It was clearly a big challenge. They’re a fantastic team, it was a good lesson for our boys to see the levels. They played like champions. It was a difficult game for us, the experience of it is probably good for us, in terms of the stadium, the atmosphere at the start of the game, and the quality that they have.”
“You’ll see more from us than that. Arsenal will beat a lot of teams here.”
“There were some bits I didn’t mind. The lads deserve better than that. Our support was amazing – the fans understand we lost this game and will learn a lesson.”
“Every game won’t look like that. This is an Arsenal team buoyed by where they are at. Leeds came here [early last season] and lost, and they stayed in the Premier League. I’m not making any early judgements. We will have to acclimatise.”
“A few years ago, this club was in League Two, playing in a different stadium. When we came in, we were 17th in the Championship. The boys have risen; the team have risen and the connection with the fans has been amazing. They have been a huge strength for us. They have to remain that way and the lads have to give everything.”
“I’m more concerned about the personality. I think we were a little bit timid in the first half.”
Lampard lost three nil at the Emirates and never once reached for an excuse. He credits Arsenal properly, calls the afternoon a lesson for his players, and names the failing himself: Coventry were timid in the first half. He then reminds everyone that the club were in League Two a few years ago and have climbed since, and he calls the connection with the supporters a strength Coventry have to hold on to. The defeat is treated as one afternoon against a good side. The progress is treated as theirs, and lasting.

Matchweek 2
Coventry City 0 – 1 Hull City
Saturday 29 August, CBS Arena
Frank Lampard – Coventry City (home)
10/12 · Identity level fed: Capability
For a game we controlled a lot of the possession we were too slow with it. Against a back five and a team who want to slow you down. We created more problems than Manchester United did, but it wasn’t like us. Normally we’re more aggressive.
There’s some serious lessons to learn. [Missing] Quality as well. You have to work towards quality. It was too much slow play from us.
It’s hard against a back five. When you cross they have players to deal with it. The Premier League brings it with feeling around it, it’s a step up. It’s a mental side for the players – I want them to get over it.
They have to get to grips with it. We have to get there quickly. You talk about experience but it’s moments on the pitch. The counter attack [goal] was our corner, you have to stop it by any means.
Those details are crucial. This season was always going to be very different to last season but I sensed a bit of edge, that quality of pass and playing safe rather than play forward. Maybe that is apprehension. I don’t like the excuse of it.
Last week that was valid because of the level of opposition, the occasion, 25 years out and a lot of debuts. We shouldn’t use it as an excuse today. It’s a game against a team we played twice last year and we finished a lot of points above them. The Premier League gives that edge and we will have to get used to that and quickly.
The lesson is don’t expect anything in the Premier League. It depends how much you want it to be (a mental blow). There are 36 games left, we’re two games in. It depends how you want to react to defeats.
Lampard names the behaviour he disliked: slow possession, safe passing and a failure to stop the counter-attack. Calling it “not like us” makes the performance Other, outside the team’s normal Identity, and “normally we’re more aggressive” reminds the players of the standard they already hold. He refuses to keep using promotion and the level of the league as excuses, says there are 36 matches left and challenges the players to decide how they react. The criticism is strong, while the framing and challenge protect their Capability.

Q: Did you deserve to lose?
I don’t think we deserved to lose. As the game went on we grew, of course they created chances but the boys did great, I’m disappointed we didn’t get what we deserved which was a point. We have played the two toughest teams on paper. All you can do is control the performance, the boys grew and the pressure we had in periods of the second half was great progression from Arsenal two weeks ago. There was a real organisation to the team, Ethan [Pinnock] came in and was great. There were not too many moments when we were on edge, I am really pleased with our lads and the fans showed what they thought of the performance. We should take a lot from these three games. Our season will be defined more by the games against likes of Hull, which was disappointing but we have plenty more games to come.
Q: On the difference from Arsenal two weeks ago?
Going to Arsenal two weeks ago felt very different, it felt like our first game for 25 years in the Premier League. Today felt like a competitive Premier League team coming with a clear idea and a threat, so we must take that forward. We’re not playing Manchester City every week. The Premier League is a high, high level and we’ll play different versions of quality against us. What’s more important to the players today is they take confidence out of the performance and we’re disappointed to lose. But in reflection there will be a lot of good taken out of it if we can use it in our mentality.
Q: On Elliott Anderson?
He is a really good player. I admire him from afar and did at Forest, but this was the first time I had seen him close up in the flesh. Very smart, very talented and a very good player – good brain, everything you need in a midfield player – and he is going to be a fantastic player for Manchester City. He had a lot of the ball today. I don’t think he could hurt us, but he was constantly on it and I highly respect players like that, no doubt.
12/12 · Identity level fed: Capability & Esteem
After a third defeat, Lampard gives Coventry a strong confidence-building message. He calls them a competitive Premier League team and supports that Identity with organisation, second-half pressure and visible progress from the Arsenal match. The two strongest opponents are placed in their proper context, and the disappointing Hull match is not excused. His players hear that they are improving, reaching the required level and capable of carrying this mentality forward.

Coventry City 0–5 Brighton & Hove Albion
Frank Lampard, Coventry City: 12/12
“Work, work, work. It’s not a magic thing that you can just come up with.”
“So I absolutely can’t critique the players in terms of how they approached it.”
Lampard gives Coventry’s players reasons to retain their confidence after a heavy defeat. He reminds them of their first-half chances and the pressure they applied, then identifies the mistake for the second goal and the red card as the moments that made the match much harder. The score does not erase the good football they played.
His answer about getting back to scoring matters too. Coventry have created chances in this match and the previous one, with good goalkeepers making saves. He asks the players to keep working on finishing and adapt to the demands of the Premier League. They have something specific to improve, with evidence that they can create the opportunities.
He also separates Taiwo’s red-card action from the kind of person he is, praises the remaining players’ approach and recalls the group’s progress from 17th in the Championship to promotion. That history gives substance to the reassurance. The players leave with their confidence supported and a job to get on with.

Nottingham Forest 0–1 Coventry City
Frank Lampard, Coventry City: 11/12
“The players really delivered in all senses, tactically, spirit, running, fighting. We get our goal and a deserved win, and the fans, an amazing day for them, so I’m very pleased for everyone.”
“He’s a fantastic player. Underrated, high level, brilliant football brain. To score a goal like that, sprinting onto a Rushworth kick, composure for the touch and the finish, really high-level goal.”
“Really pleased for him. Eyes can be drawn to goalkeepers. We’ve conceded some goals. I wouldn’t put many on Rushy. Pleased for his confidence that he can find those passes. Clean sheet, good feeling for him.”
“We have to keep our feet on the ground because it’s one win, and we’ve felt how ruthless the league is already.”
Lampard connects Coventry’s first league win to tactics, spirit, running and fighting. Jay Dasilva’s football intelligence and composure receive specific praise, while Carl Rushworth gets credit for his passing and the clean sheet.
The result is celebrated fully, then placed in perspective. One win does not erase the league’s difficulty. Keeping their feet on the ground forms the next path. The only missing piece is a more explicit longer-term Towards Outcome.

Frank Lampard, Coventry City
12/12. Identity level: Belonging and Purpose.
“We played like the team we want to be here. There’s so much spirit and energy. We know we’re going to have to suffer at times in games; we have to understand what the level is.”
“But the work ethic from the team, the belief, then you get what you deserve, which is great finishes. We haven’t had that rub of the green, which might have helped us nick a few more points.”
“As a complete performance, we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground because it’s only one game and we need 30 more of those. But it’s a great feeling for the players.”
“We are going to be a relative underdog in pretty much every game, so we have to maximise everything beyond the limit. It’s a good feeling for the players.”
“They need to keep their feet on the ground because the next one is tough and the one after that is tough. We looked like a team that was hard for teams to come here (and beat) tonight. That’s the feeling we haven’t had in our first home games this season.”
“This gives good confidence, so it’s a balance of confidence against over-confidence for us.”
“They have to stay humble to that and understand. Every part of the level has gone up.”
“It’s not a nice feeling, looking at the table and seeing zero goals before Forest.”
“Your left-back who hardly scores (Jay Dasilva), scores at Forest, it’s a lovely story but we need more. It’s great and I think it’ll be great for lads going forward to feel that confidence.”
“Good for all the players that scored and good for the team to feel that we can rely on that.”
Lampard wins 4-1 and spends most of the answer taking the heat out of it. Underdog in pretty much every game takes the weight off them. Maximise everything beyond the limit is the standard he asks for anyway. Spirit, energy, work ethic and belief are the SQAs, and he gives them to the group rather than to any one player. The rub of the green line keeps the earlier goal drought away from the players while the belief stays theirs, so he’s got both halves of the Elevate Formula. Hard for teams to come here is the standard they can carry into the next two games he’s already called tough.

Tottenham Hotspur 3 – 1 Coventry City
Monday 19 October 2026, 8.00pm, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Carried into this edition from the Monday of the previous scoring week.
Frank Lampard, Coventry City
Score: 12/12. Identity level: Esteem and Capability.
Yeah, very pleased with the performance. I think we were in the game to say the least with the team pushing to get back to 2-1. Two outstanding goals from them which are very difficult to say much about other than whether the second one was questionable in terms of the arm up in Milan’s face. the quality of the finish is exceptional but our all round play, the feeling in the stadium was clear throughout the game we were a threat from the first minute, we could always be a threat in the game, we defended really well as well at times and I’m proud of the performance, 3-1 feels nasty at the end because of the last goal but other than that I can’t ask for much more than those details and it’s hard to have a detail to keep out two shots in the top corner that’s the reality of Premier League football
Yeah but in the build up to that we created some good moments with ourselves and the moments they had I think they got caught offside and it might have felt like there were chances for them where it played through. But other than that, the goal comes out of nowhere. It’s a brilliant finish and a high-quality player. So I kind of asked, we wanted to start well because they start well here in every game they play. They start well and they haven’t got maybe what they feel they deserved. It wasn’t a case of that. It was a case I actually was happy with the way the team continued at 1-0 down because they felt that they were in a game and they felt that every time we broke or when we actually had some bits of control that we were a threat, and that continued from the first minute to the last, until the third goal.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, for us, you could, again, we’ll review it and go back over small details, but the feeling and flow of the game is, yeah, it was for sure, and we were brave in how we played and we played and we were getting people up on their top line we were really bright on second balls and individuals are showing their quality now with Rodoni and with Thomas Asante and players who go on they’re growing so you know it’s you know got to be careful to go too much and we’ve lost a football match but when you see this is predominantly the team that played in the championship I think eight of our boys played in the championship last year and now they’ve shown that they’re growing but the test now is consistency. Show it and keep showing it and then games will go in your favour. The opposition won’t put two in the top corner. You will get what you maybe feel you may deserve and that’s football.
Yeah, that’ll be hard though. It’s hard. I don’t like the fixture of this game. It’s the Premier League or football. You can think that Fulham are going to come first. feeling good about themselves with their result, they’re playing well and maybe not getting what they deserve and those things. So, you know, are we happy? We’ll always want more from what we’ve done. We feel like there’s a couple more points that we could have already gained. But at the same time, we know the test of this league. So we just have to keep going.
After the 3-1 defeat, Lampard refuses to let the scoreline define his players. The two goals were pure quality into the top corner, so he sees it as Tottenham’s individual brilliance rather than anything Coventry did wrong, one-off moments rather than a deeper problem. He is clear that those sorts of finishes don’t come along every week.
Against that, he points to real progress. Eight of the side were in the Championship last season, and they are already showing they belong at this level. That improvement is down to them, it is across the board, and it looks built to last. He acknowledges the gap in quality without dressing it up. The real test now is consistency, keep doing it, and keep doing it again.

Coventry City 0 – 1 Fulham
Saturday 24 October 2026, 3.00pm, Coventry Building Society Arena.
Frank Lampard, Coventry City
Score: 9/12. Identity level: Belonging and Capability. Second assessed interview of this edition.
Disappointed to lose. I don’t think I can sit here and stand here and say we should have won it because I think it was one of those tight games without big chances for either team. At that point, we want to get a point out of the game because we know that all these games are tough. So, yeah, I think defensively didn’t get threatened too much. They were a good team, a lot of threat. It’s a lot of good possession, and they had some ball, but it wasn’t possession. It was really, really hurting us, but we didn’t threaten them quite enough to give ourselves a chance to win the game. But as I say, when it’s like that, then you don’t want to concede. Fair play. It’s a good moment of quality from them, but obviously disappointing to lose.
Yeah, a little bit, but at the same time, I think good players, when they stand up, the box and they have that ability and they’ve got a few in their team that can do that and he shifts it and finds the only little small area that can give him a goal in the action. So I’m disappointed but also it was a quality moment from them.
We hope not. extent of the injury as such because the game was carrying on I haven’t seen him yet since the game he played with some sickness as well and he wouldn’t have known it because he was playing well again so we hope it’s a small injury
yeah I don’t think it hasn’t because you want to win games but talk of turning corners this season is going to be tough and it will be these moments when we don’t win games because we’re in the Premier League now and in the last two years we’ve risen from a long way, so we have to be very robust and very resilient in these moments, stay positive, a tough week, but we have to continue.
Lampard is honest about a game that did not have much in it. He will not claim they should have won. He names what they did not do, and that is threaten Fulham enough. He gives Bobb’s finish its credit.
The Identity line is the strong part. Coventry have come a long way in two years and they will be robust and resilient in moments like this, and that is who they are under pressure.
Adversity is where it costs him. The goal is down to Fulham and it is one moment, but nothing tells the players it passes, and he goes the other way by warning there will be more weeks like this.

Matchweek 9
Coventry City 3 – 1 Sunderland
Saturday 31 October 2026, 3.00pm, Coventry Building Society Arena, Coventry.
Frank Lampard, Coventry City
Score: 12/12. Identity level: Belonging & Capability.
Frank, congratulations. Great result. How pleased were you with the performance as well?
Really pleased. It was the energy. I spoke before about the game. We didn’t have our usual energy last week. This week we did. And sometimes you get what you deserve through that. We made it a difficult game for them. And I think from the beginning we started really well. And then we get our goals, which are fantastic. First goal from Tatsu. And yeah, nice to feel the stadium the way it was and the players playing with that and the fight. And in the end, even when it goes 3-1, you have to see the game out in the right way. And we did it. So very happy.
Yeah, you mentioned to me before the game about the energy you wanted to see. You were a bit too passive against Fulham. Completely different today.
Yeah, and you know, it’s a 38-game season. Those games can come along. We are, say, the players in a way. We’re learning a bit as we go. A lot of the players haven’t played in the Premier League. We’ve got the players that have come in that are finding their feet and getting accustomed to it and getting their minutes. Ty who’s scoring is great for him. He is an experienced player, but we haven’t got many of those. So it’s great to see the players get that feeling of what it takes to win games. Because it’s so hard to win games in this league, especially for us because of our position. But the feeling that’s great in the stadium felt it.
And a few of the players that you brought in today, as you say, haven’t had many Premier League minutes, but took to it really well.
Yeah. Yeah, great. You know, I said before, we need the squad. And that’s not against the players who may come out. But Victor Torp comes in, he’s been training at a level that’s an absolute example. And he’s got his qualities anyway, I know that. And he came in and continued how he’s working day to day. So that’s great. And Jan comes in on the left for us. And again, adaptation a little bit to the league and all those things that come with it, joining the group. But he shows some qualities that I really like. So, Steph’s Maffoony playing at the centre-back as well. So, we’ve got some issues at centre-back. We’re missing Bobby Thomas on a role. So, they’re big players for us. So, it was great to see the players come together. Every little bit of grit that you can put into a game to get a result against a good team.
A word about Steph, because that was only his second Premier League start, but he slotted in so well.
Well, there’s some players, I think, that are of a certain level. And there’s some players that are of another level, in my opinion, as a young lad. And I don’t want to give him too much credit, because it will maybe go to his head. He’s a lovely, confident lad that’s came in and off the pitch, around the training ground, has settled in brilliantly. He’s also humble with it. So, he’s got a really nice way about him. But that’s not even talking about his talent. Play today brings the confidence to the team. And those players always give off good energy. The older players, or the players, as I say, that are playing their first Premier League minutes. If you look at someone like Steph that says, hang on, I’m 18, I’m here, and I’m playing the way I’m playing. And that’s just how he’s been day-to-day. So, delight with him. He’s going to go a long way in the game. We’re delighted to have him.
Coventry have climbed out of the bottom three and Lampard’s first word is energy. They didn’t have their usual energy last week, this week they did, and sometimes you get what you deserve through that. The thing that was missing is named and dated, so it is Temporary, and every player knows which thing to bring back next Saturday.
Then he tells them they are learning. A lot of them haven’t played in the Premier League, the new ones are finding their feet, and it’s great to see them get that feeling of what it takes to win games. That is a way of telling a promoted squad they are good enough, as long as they keep working at the skills. The quality he points at is Torp’s training, a standard anyone in the building can copy. And he holds back the praise for an 18-year-old so it doesn’t go to his head. None of that is about tonight. He is building a squad that belongs in this division this season and the ones after it.
