Finding the right words under pressure is hard, even for managers who do it every week. PMR tracks how well they manage it in the minutes after a match.
I learned how much those words matter in places where lives were on the line. One of those moments came down to three seconds. I’ll tell you about it at the end.
Every post-match interview Álvaro Arbeloa has given in Premier Managers Revealed 2026/27, collected in one place: the quotes, the score out of 12, the Identity level and the analysis, matchweek by matchweek. For the latest standings, see the Premier Managers Revealed league tables.
Matchweek 2
Sunderland 1 – 0 Fulham
Sunday 30 August, Stadium of Light
Álvaro Arbeloa – Fulham (away)
3/12 · Identity level fed: Purpose
It was a tough game for us. We didn’t deserve it. In the second half, the first 20 minutes, we were at a level where we can play football with that energy and focus and the quality we want. Sunderland were better for many minutes.
We need to improve many things, especially the energy and the attitude. If you want to come here and play like you want to play, then you need to have the mentality. It’s not easy but we are a new team with new ideas. We will improve with time.
We will have ups and downs. We need to realise we need to show more energy and fight for every ball. Chelsea is a very tough team but when you face a team like that in your stadium, the motivation is high. You have to do it every single week, we know that.
We didn’t even fight, we didn’t run, poor technical level. We were not in the game. Against Chelsea at home, it’s easy to run and fight but you have to do it every game. It’s about the character, the mentality, and ambition.
We didn’t win any second balls. We want to be competitive, it’s the most important thing for a team. We were not at our level – we need to show something more. It is a target for my team.
Some days we will play as bad as today but that means you have to run, fight, and be narrow. We are working on it with the club. We know we have two days so we are working because we can do with the squad being stronger and more balanced.
Arbeloa is clear about the standard he wants: energy, second balls, running, fighting and a narrow shape when the football is poor. That is the useful part of the answer. Everything around it attacks the players’ Identity. “We didn’t even fight, we didn’t run” becomes a judgement about character, mentality and ambition, with no SQA to remind the group what they can rely on. Sunderland receive little credit and the current squad is again linked to the need for reinforcements. The path is specific, while the language gives the players very little belief that they can follow it.

Q: Did you deserve to lose?
We didn’t deserve to lose this game. My players did everything – good attitude, they were brave, so many chances to score more goals. They [Palace] took their chances – in the end football is about that. We did many good things to win the game. It was similar against Chelsea but we lose. For the players it’s a difficult situation, difficult moment, but I am very proud of them.
Q: On the second Palace goal?
We were really unlucky in this goal.
Q: On Palacios and García?
Cesar Palacios and Gonzalo Garcia both had a great game. Cesar scored a goal, and for Gonzalo another great performance.
10/12 · Identity level fed: Esteem & Capability
Arbeloa gives the players bravery, attitude and effort after a painful loss, and he names two strong individual performances. He accepts that Palace took their chances, although ‘we didn’t deserve to lose’ and ‘really unlucky’ place part of the explanation outside Fulham’s control. The praise builds belief, but he does not make it overtly clear that continuing to perform this way will bring the wins.
Matchweek 4
Liverpool 0–0 Fulham
Álvaro Arbeloa, Fulham: 12/12
“I think we will win games.”
Arbeloa gives reasons for his confidence. He points to Fulham’s character, personality and ambition, then explains how better defending after losing the ball helped them control Liverpool’s counter-attacks.
His belief in future wins rests on strengths the players have already shown. He recognises individual qualities and links improvement to their work in training. Fulham leave with confidence in their ability and a clear part of their football to keep developing.

Matchweek 5
Fulham 1–1 Manchester United
Álvaro Arbeloa, Fulham: 9/12
“We need to keep working, keep improving. This month we knew that it was going to be difficult against Tottenham, Liverpool away, Sunderland away, Man United, Chelsea, so many big teams, but I think we are on our way.”
“Calvin for me is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and is playing a really high level with us, with the ball, without the ball. He’s so important. He’s a key player for me. He’s our captain.”
“My players are working hard, they are open to learn, and they are playing in the way that we want to play, and I think if we continue playing this way, the victories will come.”
“We have now three weeks with not many players, and some players stay here with us, so we’ll work with them, and when they will be back, we will start again.”
“Every decision was for them, and I knew after the game against Man City that they don’t let Manchester United lose here.”
Arbeloa’s BBC interview carries strong Towards, SQA and Identity language. Fulham are on their way, the players work hard and remain open to learning, while Calvin Bassey receives specific, credible praise. Three weeks of work during the break give the group a next step.
The separate Sky interview weakens the overall message. Saying officials “don’t let Manchester United lose here” places control outside the team and risks turning one late equaliser into a wider grievance. The constructive BBC material keeps the score healthy, but the result-specific leadership cannot receive full marks.

Matchweek 6
Ipswich Town 2–1 Fulham
Saturday 10 October 2026, Portman Road, Ipswich.
Álvaro Arbeloa, Fulham: 6/12
Identity level: Safety.
Maybe you don’t know me but I played for the best team in the world. I have coached the best team in the world. Maybe you don’t know but just to let you know that pressure is part of my life since I was a kid. So it’s normal in football, it’s normal for players, it’s normal for coaches, it’s normal for everybody that is around a team. I think pressure is something that is important for me and I like it. I don’t feel fear. You cannot be a coach if you feel it. I think you have to work, take your decisions and you need to show confidence to your players. For me I’m so happy with many things that they are doing. I know it’s not easy for them. It’s not about my position, it’s about the football club that is the most important thing. Obviously it’s just six games but it’s true that we need points and it’s a final next week at home. So for us it will be a massive day.
Fulham are bottom with two points and a reporter asks Arbeloa if he can handle it. He answers by talking about himself. He played for the best team in the world, he coached the best team in the world, pressure has been part of his life since he was a kid. He’s trying to look steady, and wanting to show confidence to your players is fair enough. The problem is that he talks for a hundred words and the players hear almost nothing about themselves. Then he calls next week at home a final. That’s all or nothing, and it only pays off if they win. Lose a final and there’s nothing left to play for, so nothing here gets above one.

Matchweek 7
Fulham 1 – 0 Hull City
Saturday 17 October 2026, 3pm, Craven Cottage.
Álvaro Arbeloa, Fulham
12/12. Identity level: Belonging and Purpose.
“My players believe in our ideas and they play the way that we were playing even when we were losing games.”
“Pressure is a privilege. I am here because I want the best for Fulham, for this club. I want the best for my players. I want the best for my supporters.”
“We were having the same feeling as other matches, when we were controlling the game for long spells and having good chances but didn’t score.”
“Our rivals punish our mistakes or take their chances, but today we were brilliant for 90 minutes.”
“We controlled the game, had many chances and didn’t concede any clear chances to Hull, a very good team. They are tough to beat.”
“I am very happy, especially for the supporters, they deserve this win, for the players, they were looking for this victory and have been working so hard.”
“We deserved it in other matches, but we couldn’t get it; today was finally the day.”
“We have so many players with talent who can score. They will have chances. Players from the bench will be so important for us too. We have many chances and we need to try and take them.”
“This is a massive game for us, a massive week because we have Coventry [City], then Crystal Palace in seven days.”
“It won’t be easy, but we know how we need to play and compete, we have to be competitive in this league. We have our way and hope we can win in many games.”
Fulham had been playing well and losing, and the first thing Arbeloa does is say the players kept to the plan through all of it. My players believe in our ideas and they play the way that we were playing even when we were losing games is an SQA that doesn’t depend on the result. The drought gets treated as narrow and finished, today was finally the day, while the belief stays theirs, so both halves of the Elevate Formula are there. Pressure is a privilege is the Identity line. Coventry then Palace in seven days is the Path, with the timing attached. Last week’s final has gone.

Matchweek 8
Coventry City 0 – 1 Fulham
Saturday 24 October 2026, 3.00pm, Coventry Building Society Arena.
Álvaro Arbeloa, Fulham
Score: 12/12. Identity level: Esteem and Capability.
well I think now we have the reward that we were looking for in another matches we did a very good game we compete for 90 minutes we’re trying to play our football it wasn’t easy because Coventry was a tough team we knew it before the match and I think and we did really well, we are so happy and I think the last victory away from home was many months ago so we are so happy with this victory, it’s very important for us and we need to keep working and keep improving.
we know that we have the quality and we have players that they can score in any moment so but we need to press well we need to defend so well here in the Premier League it’s so difficult with the long throw in set pieces counter-attacks so you can feel that the they can score in any second if you lose your concentration and I think we did really well
Yes, winning his goals, Josh’s goals, Gonzalo’s goals, the people that play in front and our attacking players they are so important because they need to make the difference, they need to score goals and I know they are young players and the most difficult thing in football is goals, but they are working so hard during the week, we are improving every day, every week, so yes, I think he’s doing well and he needs to try to be aggressive when he has the ball.
Yeah, it’s very good, he did really well and yes, I think it’s the best thing to give your last touch in a game.
Arbeloa has a second win in a row, but he spends most of the time talking about the difficult part. His opening remarks, that they have now got the reward they perhaps deserved in other games, are a clever way of telling the players they have lasting qualities. The lack of reward in those earlier games was only fleeting, because they got it this time. He is building resilience and confidence with every word.
Goals are the hardest thing in football, and he says that about young players who are working hard every week, so the lack of goals is not down to them and it will not last.
He notes that they already have the quality, because they have players who can score at any moment. He also praises them for their hard work and continual improvement.
He is also clear about the standards he wants. Press well, defend well, and if concentration goes for a second in this league they will be punished.
Bobb gets a specific next step: be aggressive when he has the ball.

Matchweek 9
Aston Villa 1 – 1 Fulham
Saturday 31 October 2026, 8.00pm, Villa Park, Birmingham.
Álvaro Arbeloa, Fulham
Score: 12/12. Identity level: Belonging & Purpose.
Alvaro, congratulations on the hard-earned point here today, but I don’t think any neutrals would say that you didn’t deserve at least a share of the spoils today. You must be very pleased with the way your team performed this afternoon.
Yes, of course, especially in the second half. I think we were more aggressive, we controlled the tempo of the game, we had so many chances to score some goals, at the end we couldn’t take the chances and yes, but I am happy, I’m happy because we knew before the match and that’s how difficult it is to win here. You can see Manchester City, they lost one week ago and they are a Champions League team with a fantastic coach, so I think for me I’m really proud of my players because they show ambition and they show character and we play in our way and for me that is the most important thing in this stadium, we play in the way that we believe.
You had chances first half, even more in the second half and generally what kept you out was the performance of the goalkeeper’s Zion Suzuki and then ironically it’s his error that gives you the equaliser.
Yes, for me he’s a fantastic keeper, fantastic keeper and I think he did really well this night and he was unlucky in our goal but he saved two or three goals for Villa before.
Defensively at the moment you are so, so solid, aren’t you? I think it’s four goals in the last six games. What has made the difference to you as a defensive force do you feel?
I think we are choosing better when we are pressing, when we want to be aggressive and we are controlling the transition and we are much better organised when we have the ball, that is very important for us because we are a team that we want to play in the opposite half with the ball creating chances but you know in the Premier League how quick are the attacking players and you need to control the transition and obviously second balls. Yeah, I think we are growing as a team, we are improving every week and this is the way.
Two wins in a row prior to tonight’s game, this keeps the unbeaten run continuing. How important was it just to keep that going?
For me it’s important the way that we play against a Champions League team, against a tough team in their stadium. That’s the most important thing. My players are believing in the way that we play and they are fighting, they are improving, they are working. I think we are starting just a long journey, I hope. I think we will improve, we can do better and for that we will work every day.
You went across to say thank you to your supporters at the end there and I didn’t think they were going to let you go for a while, you were posing for various selfies, that must feel good and they’re right behind you.
Yes, of course for me it’s really important because we are here for them and this club belongs to them, they are so important, they are travelling to support us so we can feel behind us and Wednesday was a hard night for everyone in the stadium and yes, I think tonight is a good night for everybody because we did well and I think they are proud of their team.
Fulham’s goal came off the opposition goalkeeper’s mistake, and asked about it Arbeloa calls Suzuki a fantastic keeper twice and points out he had saved Villa two or three times before it. There is an advantage in that for Fulham, and it is not a small one. If the keeper was that good all night, then the chances Fulham created were earned and the equaliser was not charity. His players hear that they deserved a goal rather than that they got lucky.
The rest is about who Fulham are rather than where they sit. We play in our way, we play in the way that we believe, and he repeats it as the most important thing in that stadium. That is Identity work, and it is the most efficient thing a manager can do, because once a squad believes that is who they are, the SQAs that go with it, the ambition, the character and the fighting, start happening without being asked for. The specifics are there as well: choose better when pressing, control the transition, control the second balls. And he closes Wednesday off as a hard night and tonight as a good one.

What links this league table to a life-or-death negotiation?
A young mother. Her children asleep in the back of the car. A hosepipe connected to the exhaust. A police negotiator with three seconds to find the words that might save their lives.
That call is where The 7 Skills to impress™ began.
When I listen to a manager after a match, I listen for the message beneath the words. A manager can be talking about a win or a loss, but the way they frame it can lift or chip away at a player’s belief before anyone even realises it.
