Xabi Alonso: every quote, 2026/27

Finding the right words under pressure is hard, even for managers who do it every week. PMR tracks how well they manage it in the minutes after a match.

I learned how much those words matter in places where lives were on the line. One of those moments came down to three seconds. I’ll tell you about it at the end.

Every post-match interview Xabi Alonso has given in Premier Managers Revealed 2026/27, collected in one place: the quotes, the score out of 12, the Identity level and the analysis, matchweek by matchweek. For the latest standings, see the Premier Managers Revealed league tables.

Chelsea 4 – 3 Brighton & Hove Albion

Sunday 30 August, Stamford Bridge

Xabi Alonso – Chelsea (home)

10/12 · Identity level fed: Capability

Hard fought win but this is the Premier League. We knew that Brighton were tough to beat recently in these games. There was history. It was good to finish with the win but many things happened.

We will have time to analyse different stages. It was a brilliant first half hour. We could have scored more than three. But we were sitting too deep after that.

But this is a process. We need to develop with these wins which give you the confidence. All the wins I enjoy a lot, but it was a game that in different moments had different feelings. In the end, we’re happy with the result.

We value this win against a very good opponent who have been tough in the last few years. We are happy with that, and there are things and moments that we have done well, but it’s a process to keep on learning and improving. Usually, that is easier with a win. He has been terrific in all the games he has played this season and also the pre-season.

He has the desire to play each game 100% and have a terrific season. We need to help him but it’s important he has this hunger to do it. It’s great to have him. We saw that even today.

Even if we conceded three goals, he had a straight impact and he helped the team really well. We are happy we have him. He is a great personality and a great goalkeeper. His expression and his charisma influence the rest of the team.

I am happy with his first impact. He has been in the building for 48 hours so now we will have the whole week to prepare for the next one and day by day we will feel his presence because he has this charisma, this aura to influence and to have a very positive connection with the rest of the team. No, I would say it is quite normal. It happens in many teams, other teams that they have already worked for and they are together and they have more games together.

We will see what happens. We are ready for whatever. Most important is the team. And however we finish on Tuesday, I am happy it will be a good squad to compete this season.

He was cautious to stop and say his feeling wasn’t the best. We need to assess during the week, but it wasn’t something new.

Alonso enjoys a difficult win and keeps it inside the development of the team. He praises the first half hour, admits Chelsea sat too deep, and says victories give the squad confidence while they learn. His descriptions of hunger, charisma and personality give individual players credible SQAs. The collective identity and adversity framing are present more lightly, so a thoughtful winner’s answer earns ten.

Q: Your assessment?

The assessment and the feeling [is that] it hurts. It hurts to lose. It hurts to suffer our first defeat. It has been a very intense game, a great fight between two sides who have given everything. They have played with the top level of concentration, of intensity. We have tried, we score early, after that Arsenal push us hard and we were struggling a little bit to get control of the ball. After the equaliser, it has been quite balanced. We had a couple of chances. It’s about details. Once you concede, you need to know it’s just one goal. Disappointed that we couldn’t take anything from here.

Q: On creating opportunities?

It was never going to be a game to create 12 opportunities. They are hard to beat, they are hard to create chances [against], but we had 3, 4, chances to score more than one goal. This is a process. It’s still early days for us. We want to start having clean sheets, they will come. The players are committed to working hard, to knowing that we’re on the way to compete in each game. Not happy that we couldn’t get anything but we need to keep calm and carry on.

Q: Too early to say Chelsea will score a lot but also concede a lot?

It’s too early. Time will tell. We want to keep improving in certain areas, we want to keep doing as well as we are doing.

To Sky Sports: “It hurts. It hurts because a defeat has to hurt. It has been a very intense game with different moments for everything. We had chances to equalise.”

12/12 · Identity level fed: Capability & Purpose

Alonso allows the defeat to hurt while containing it within one goal, a few details and an early stage of the process. He credits Arsenal’s pressure and praises his own players’ concentration, intensity and commitment. Calm, hard work, clean sheets and continued improvement give Chelsea a credible path, so the loss remains Fleeting without being dismissed.

Matchweek 4 league table

Chelsea 2–2 Hull City

Xabi Alonso, Chelsea: 5/12

“We’re talking, we address and we will get better.”

Alonso identifies a recurring problem when Chelsea take the lead. He asks them to stay closer together, keep the right distances and defend with greater intensity. Those instructions give the players something practical to work on.

Calling the team “too soft” is more risky. It can sound like a judgement about the players themselves, especially when he extends the criticism across several kinds of defending. He acknowledges their control and chances earlier in the game, but offers little evidence of the defensive strengths they already have. His promise of improvement would carry more weight with that reassurance.

Matchweek 5 league table

Brentford 3–0 Chelsea

Xabi Alonso, Chelsea: 6/12

“Everything was disappointing, especially the result for sure, the main thing. But we can do better. We must do better.”

“We missed a little bit this last pass, this last dribble to get shots in clearer positions, but that’s one part. The other part is when you need to hold and when you need to be tight, when you need to know that the opponent is going to try to attack you, how to defend, to stick together and win duels.”

“There are individual details, collective details or units that we have to do better, but it’s not only defensively, with the ball, some parts that we need to do better.”

Alonso offers a useful technical diagnosis. The final pass, the final dribble, defensive compactness and duels all give Chelsea something to work on. “We can do better” also points towards improvement.

The opening word “everything” makes the defeat unnecessarily Broad. Almost no player strength or recent evidence is banked, so the correction has little Identity support underneath it. His criticism also points towards coaching problems. If the players do not know when to hold, when to stay tight, how to attack or how to defend together, those behaviours have not been trained into them well enough. It is unfair to point the finger at the players for something the coaching staff are responsible for teaching.

Matchweek 6 league table

Chelsea 5–1 AFC Bournemouth

Saturday 10 October 2026, Stamford Bridge, London.

Xabi Alonso, Chelsea: 10/12

Identity level: Esteem and Capability.

Crazy game, but an emphatic one from your point of view.

Well, I wouldn’t say crazy. I think there were different moments. For sure, we started really well, and the first half was very, very serious. We were in good control of the game. And even the second half, we started well, but after conceding, you know, there were ten minutes a little bit where the game could finish in a more close way. But the fourth goal was really important, and after that the game was over. But it has been a good performance and a good win.

And you must be delighted with such a goal threat you look in every game.

Yeah, but we need to be complete — to have this goal threat, to be good with the ball, to be good defending. And we’re in the process, but for sure we have great attackers, great players that link to each other, help each other. And that’s really enjoyable when you see that they want to help their teammate for the best of the team.

You’ve brought Jordan Henderson for many qualities that we all know about, but perhaps scoring twice in a game wasn’t one of them, and the calibre of goals as well.

Yeah, even from the free kick. But he’s been using this international break to practice his free kicks. It’s great to see that he’s been working with him, and he said “you can score,” and he did it really well. And that’s why, apart from the beauty of the first goal.

How important is seeing Caicedo back in there today to the way you want to play?

Yeah, we have seen how important is Moisés playing today alongside Hendo. Rom as well when he came on, he did really well. So I think that normally when you have a balance and a strong midfield, the team is in some better shape, and with Moisés we have a better midfield for sure.

And I guess if you’re a perfectionist, you just want that clean sheet, do you? Is that the only annoying thing in a game?

It will come, it will come, for sure. Today we were close. It was a great win, great lead. But the win with a clean sheet will come.

And just finally, the announcement — Cole Palmer today, new eight-year contract. I mean, how pleased are you for that stability for a player of that calibre?

No, I’m delighted for him because he deserves it. He’s a top player, and delighted for the club that we have him for many years. He can be one of those players to be remembered in the future for Chelsea, but now we need to keep working, keep working hard so that he enjoys this year and that we have success in these years.

Chelsea win 5-1, the interviewer calls it crazy, and Alonso says he wouldn’t. He talks instead about ten minutes where the game could have got closer, so the win isn’t allowed to cover anything up. Then he says what he wants Chelsea to be: complete, a goal threat, good with the ball, good defending. That’s a standard everyone can understand. He names people too, Henderson practising free kicks through the international break, Caicedo back and making the midfield stronger, Palmer good enough to be remembered at Chelsea. He drops marks on Adversity and Path, though. The clean sheet he wants gets it will come, and nobody is told what to do about it.

Matchweek 7

Matchweek 7 league table

Everton 0 – 2 Chelsea

Saturday 17 October 2026, 12.30pm, Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Xabi Alonso, Chelsea

10/12. Identity level: Capability.

“Very happy with the result and the performance. We needed one of these away wins where we have played very professional and serious, looking solid.”

“We looked in control of the game. There were moments for sure when we had to defend but overall the team looked mature, knowing what to do in each moment, knowing we would have a moment.”

“That came in the second half and after that we were good with the ball, creating chances, conceding not much. To win away is always tough and we finally got the clean sheet.”

“We need to keep working. It is just one game. If it is just one clean sheet, it will be very poor. We need many more. For sure, the first one of the season feels good. We need to keep going, working and being serious.”

Alonso gets the first clean sheet of the season and sets the bar higher in the same answer. If it is just one clean sheet, it will be very poor, we need many more. That’s a standard his players can act on. Mature, professional, serious, knowing what to do in each moment: those are the group’s SQAs, and he repeats the words often enough that they read as an identity rather than a compliment. Adversity drops to 1 because there isn’t much of a setback in a 2-0 away win and he doesn’t name one. Path is 1 as well. He sets the measure without saying what changes.

Matchweek 8

Matchweek 8 league table

Chelsea 0 – 2 Tottenham Hotspur

Saturday 24 October 2026, 5.30pm, Stamford Bridge.

Xabi Alonso, Chelsea

Score: 9/12. Identity level: Safety and Belonging.

well I think that there were many different moments in the game first half we wanted I wanted some more intensity we were wanted to approach them to high pressing and we were a little bit not a strong enough in duels but you know they had the chances we had some kind of chances in in the first half and I think that in the second half we have talked we have started a bit better we had a good chance with with Pedro and we have spoken that it was about the first goal which way it was going to be and once they have scored I had this this is not what we wanted straight almost came the the red card but overall I think disappointed with the result and we have to be honest with the performance I think that it’s a game that we wanted and we could have played better

No I think that there were moments that we had planned to be more aggressive after with the ball we we lacked a little bit this this composure to to give more passes and to have this stability but but it was about being an intense derby and going through difficult moments tough moments that you need to to manage and and you know one key moment was the first goal

Well, this is football. It’s about doing great things and it’s about dealing and overcoming from difficult moments and we will support Mike because he is a great person and we want to help him for the future and he’s mature and we come together from this moment.

well it would be so easy though so cheap to talk about all the players that we are missing but we we have the squad that we have I think that we we believe that we can do better with the team that we have so we have to be self-critic and to take our responsibility

I have to check, I think that after the 1-0 it was hard for everyone to deal when the game was so close, it affected a little bit our emotional control and it turned a little bit the momentum of the game.

Alonso refuses the obvious excuse. Talking about the players who are missing would be easy and cheap, so they take responsibility with the squad they have.

He also backs Penders after the error, calling him mature and saying the group comes together from this moment, so the goalkeeper is not left to shoulder the blame alone.

What is thin is everything going forward. He wanted more intensity, they could have played better, they will be self-critical. None of that becomes a clear standard anyone can act on, and no real quality of this group gets named beyond a general belief that they can do better than this.

Matchweek 9

Matchweek 9 league table

Chelsea 2 – 0 Manchester United

Saturday 31 October 2026, 12.30pm, Stamford Bridge, London.

Xabi Alonso, Chelsea

Score: 10/12. Identity level: Esteem & Capability.

Very well done, how did you see that?

Yeah, … intense, but it feels good to get the three points, to have a serious performance with different moments. First half was quite intense. Second half we started much better, we got the lead. And after with 2-0, the sense [that] the game was on our side. And we did well, three points that are important, and we carry on now.

You played some good football, didn’t you, in that second half?

Yes, I would say so. I think that the first 15 minutes of the second half, till the sending-off, we were in good control. We have connected really well. We had good balance, and we looked much better.

Estevao, what did you make of his performance?

The crowd loved him. Yeah, really, really happy for him. He deserved this moment to connect with his good feeling on the pitch. With the crowd as well. He got that goal, he was close to score. He was tired at the end. But he deserved that ovation that he got, and very good news. And it’s the best way to respond to a coach when he’s not playing that much.

There was a real hunger, wasn’t there, in the press, in winning the ball back. Real appetite.

Yeah, well, this is what it takes. If you don’t have that in the Premier League, it’s difficult to get points. And today, especially in the second half, it was quite transitional. There was a moment for both sides. But in the second half, we were better.

And where does this set you up now, for the next two or three weeks?

Just Sunderland. We have Sunderland after this international break, so we want to focus on that.

Alonso asks for a serious performance rather than a win, and he keeps the two apart all the way through. The three points feel good, the sending-off put the game on their side, and he says so rather than letting a 2-0 stand as proof of anything. The standard he sets is the hunger in winning the ball back. This is what it takes, and without it in the Premier League it’s difficult to get points. That is Towards language, because it gives every player something to go and do.

He is warmest about Estevao, and the useful part for everyone else is the last line of that answer: it’s the best way to respond to a coach when you’re not playing much. Every player on the bench now knows what a good reaction looks like. The SQAs are where he falls short. Good control, good balance and a good connection describe the ninety minutes, and none of them is given to the group as a quality they own and can rely on next week. The setback he has to run through the Elevate Formula is a slightly intense first half, so there is not much for the filters to work on either.

What links this league table to a life-or-death negotiation?

A young mother. Her children asleep in the back of the car. A hosepipe connected to the exhaust. A police negotiator with three seconds to find the words that might save their lives.

That call is where The 7 Skills to impress™ began.

When I listen to a manager after a match, I listen for the message beneath the words. A manager can be talking about a win or a loss, but the way they frame it can lift or chip away at a player’s belief before anyone even realises it.
